Lac Massawippi au naturel

Changing seasons, light and weather.

“Thaw with her gentle persuasion is more powerful than Thor with his hammer. The one melts, the other breaks into pieces.” – Henry David Thoreau

Massawippi was formed by the movement of the earth’s crust – a tectonic lake. This is rare in the north, where most were formed by retreating glaciers. Tectonic lakes tend to be very deep often more than 300 feet or about 100 m. Patterns of shoreline rocky cliffs show rotation, with sedimentary layers often turned ninety degrees. Internal currents including upwelling contribute to the fascinating and changing ice patterns.
