About Me

Photographer / Marine and Freshwater Ecologist

Karl Forrest Ehrlich

I am a graduate of a MASTER CLASS – Fine Arts and Sciences of Woody Omens (see ACKNOWLEDGMENTS & THANKS below).

I try to capture forms, light and colour, which are not only fleeting but often overlooked or lost when one sees and photographs objects.

My goal is to show the beauty of nature with refreshed perception.

I was born in the Lower East Side of NYC, raised in LA, studied and worked in Scotland and have lived the last four decades in Quebec. I am the third generation of my family to live in Quebec.

I am a marine and freshwater ecologist with a background in forestry. I am co‑developer of the Bacta-Pur® System of applied environmental microbiology to protect and restore our common universal heritage — The Earth and its Inhabitants. No matter what one’s gender, economic status, religion or other personal beliefs, we are all Earthlings. If we don’t find common ground to restore, preserve and protect of our small, insignificant but precious planet, we shall all be doomed. I have traveled the globe giving technical classes and seminars. Our 100+ acre ecological reserve of forest, wetlands and lakes is wonderfully biodiverse. Capturing and creating images of nature is another expression of my life’s work. Detailed information on my background is shown in the following pdf: KFE-Resume.

My interest in photography started in the ‘60s, but my efforts largely lay idle through my all-consuming career. Now I am back to my love of photography.

Science and art may seem distinct fields at first view, but they have a common requirement. One must learn to see what is really around us. I remember a high school teacher who kept reminding us “eyes have you and see not”.

Canadian natural beauty has inspired artists from the Pacific to the Atlantic to the Arctic oceans. I humbly try to contribute what I see and what it makes me feel. Living on the edge of Lake Massawippi allows me to experience its ever-changing moods and capture fleeting images. This is a very different experience from when I travel hoping that I shall be lucky about conditions and lighting.

Lake Massawippi is my muse. The photos of Massawippi and of Form, Colour and Light are dedicated to the more than 180 indigenous peoples of Canada who lived close to nature (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Indigenous_peoples_of_Canada) and particularly to the Abenaki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abenaki) who dwelt in the area.

AKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND THANKS

I am very fortunate and grateful, to have Woody Omens, A.S.C. (past president Amer. Soc. Cinematographers), Professor Emeritus, USC, School of Cinematic Arts and past chairman Motion Picture Academy Student Academy Awards Committee, as my mentor and professor of photography and art. Woody is not only an award winning cinematographer but also a painter, art historian, photographer and Renaissance man who sees, studies and builds relationships between film, painting, music, physics, astrophysics and life. I owe him so much for the knowledge he shares and for his patience.

I also wish to thank Melanie-Alexandra Beauchamp (arborescencedesign.ca) for her help in ameliorating my French and for building my website.
